Welcome, one and all, to The Kokiri Reader!

What is this blog about? Well, it’s about me… or, at least, whatever interests me. According to a book I started reading (but didn’t finish) about writing for an audience, the best thing to do is write whatever you would want to read yourself, because in a world this big, there are going to be thousands of people who want to read the same thing. Thus, here we are. And here you are.

If the blog is about my interests, then what are those interests? Well, there are many, but I tried to sum them up in the title of the blog, so let’s break that down:

The Kokiri Reader: I am a huge fan of The Legend of Zelda video game franchise. On a related note, I greatly enjoy stories of good vs. evil with all the endless possibilites that fiction provides. As such, I am also a huge fan of Doctor Who, Sonic the Hedgehog, and a variety of action-adventure movies and video games. The name “Kokiri”, as you can probably tell from the image at top, is a reference to the Kokiri Forest from The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, which is inhabited by the child-like Kokiri, a race of beings who never grow up. Personally, I think the Kokiri Forest is heavily inspired by Peter Pan‘s Never-neverland- which is the name in the book, regardless of Disney eliminating one “never”.  In any case, though, this idea of not growing up is one I connect with, because in many ways that’s how I feel- despite my adult responsibilities and all the hours I spend fulfilling those duties, I’m still fascinated by the things that consumed my childhood hours.

The Kokiri Reader: I read books. A lot of books. I don’t read as many as I would like (the Internet is too distracting), but I’m aiming to fix that. I also do a lot of reading on the Internet- blogs, online newspapers, opinion sites, usually about politics, religion, video games, and writing. I read the Bible. I read TVTropes. My absolute favorite series of books is Sherlock Holmes. I learned in English class at college that I love analyzing literature like Holmes analyzes clues. Not a day goes by where I don’t read something.

The Kokiri Reader: The dictionary definition of a nonhuman “reader”, via Google, is “a book containing extracts of a particular author’s work or passages of text designed to give learners of a language practice in reading.” Think of The Kokiri Reader as something akin to that, though it’s not intended to teach you how to read English. Instead, the overall thrust of each post will be analysis and thought about the subject at hand, though, I must admit, most of the subjects are going to be about fiction and the use of language to communicate ideas.

The Kokiri Reader: I am the Kokiri Reader. I am an English major, aspiring to be a teacher perhaps, or a literary expert, maybe. I’m definitely going to be a writer, though, with a few fiction books and this blog. I am also developing a concept for a literary webshow on YouTube- because there’s a draught of those- for good reason, perhaps? Well, we’ll see, but that won’t be for a while at least. I believe the art of reading is an extremely important tool for people to open their minds and think critically. It is a tool that is desperately in need of attention. Maybe, just maybe, this blog will inspire some of that attention.
